Why We Added a Pocket to Kids' Pants

The knee pocket on our striped cotton pants range is one of the details we are asked about most. Parents love it. Children love it even more. And it was not a styling decision — it was a functional one that came directly from watching how toddlers and young children actually use their clothing.

Children are collectors. They pick up things everywhere they go. Smooth pebbles from the garden. A bottlecap from the park. A coin they found on the floor. A small toy car they refuse to leave at home. A piece of coloured chalk. A button. The instinct to hold onto small found objects is universal in children between ages 2 and 7, and without a pocket, those objects end up in mouths, in parents' hands, or scattered and lost.

A pocket gives children agency. It is their space, their storage. It is the first experience of having something that belongs specifically to them on their own person. This sounds like an overstatement until you watch a 3-year-old carefully place their “secret” pebble into their knee pocket and pat it closed. It is not an overstatement.

Why Knee Pocket Rather Than Hip Pocket

Most adult trousers and older children's pants use hip pockets. We chose to place the pocket at knee level on our striped pants for three reasons specific to toddler use.

First, depth of reach. Toddlers have short arms relative to their body height. A hip pocket on the side seam requires the same reach action as an adult — hand swings down and back. For a toddler, particularly one in the 1–3 year range, this reach is awkward. A knee-level pocket is at a natural reach height for a child's arm swinging forward. They can see the pocket, they can reach it easily, and inserting or retrieving objects is an accessible action even for very young children.

Second, sitting comfort. Hip pockets create a raised surface under the seat when a child sits down. For toddlers who spend significant time sitting on hard floors, this is uncomfortable and can cause the pants to shift or bunch. A knee pocket does not affect the sitting surface.

Third, visual design. The knee pocket adds a visual detail to the pant that breaks up what would otherwise be a plain surface. It is a point of interest that children find appealing and that gives the garment a slightly more designed, considered look.

Pocket Depth and Safety

Pocket depth matters for toddler clothing. A pocket that is too shallow allows objects to fall out when the child bends the knee — which is constantly. A pocket that is too deep makes it difficult for small hands to retrieve objects from the bottom.

Our knee pockets are calibrated for toddler hand depth: wide enough to accept common small objects easily, deep enough that objects do not fall out during normal movement, and shallow enough that a 2-year-old can reach the bottom without difficulty.

The pocket opening is horizontal rather than angled, which reduces the chance of objects working their way out during running or jumping. The pocket bag itself is made from the same cotton fabric as the pant, not a synthetic lining, which means it stays breathable and does not add a plastic-like interior layer.
