How to Choose Sweatshirts for Kids: Fleece vs French Terry, Fit, Size and How Many to Buy (1 to 8 Years)

The best sweatshirt for a child aged 1 to 8 in India is 100% cotton, matched to how cold your city actually gets. A plain, non-fleeced cotton sweatshirt is enough for mild southern and western winters. A 240 GSM French terry sweatshirt covers most cool mornings and AC rooms. A fleeced cotton sweatshirt is the one for north Indian December and January. Check the label for polyester, choose a relaxed fit with ribbed cuffs, and buy 3 to 5. Our sweatshirt sets for kids come in all three fabric types, in sizes 1 to 8 years.

We make children's clothes in our own unit in Tiruppur, so this guide is written from the cutting table, not the shop floor. Below you will find what each sweatshirt fabric really does, a city-by-city chart for choosing one, how sizing works, how many to buy, and a short checklist to use before you pay for anything, from us or from anyone else.

In this article

What should you look for when buying a sweatshirt for kids?

Most parents choose a sweatshirt by its print. The print matters to your child, but five other things decide whether the sweatshirt actually gets worn all winter or stays in the cupboard because it "scratches" or "feels hot".

  1. Fibre content. Turn the garment inside out and read the care label. "100% cotton" means the fabric breathes. "Cotton rich", "poly-cotton" or "fleece" with no fibre listed usually means polyester is in there.
  2. Inside finish. Run your hand inside. A smooth inside is plain knit. Small soft loops mean French terry. A fuzzy, brushed pile means fleece. This single detail tells you more about warmth than the outside ever will.
  3. Fit. Look for room at the shoulders, chest and tummy. Children layer, crawl, climb and sit cross-legged on the floor. A tight sweatshirt rides up and gets refused.
  4. Cuffs and hem. Ribbed cuffs at the wrist (and at the ankle on a set) hold warmth in and keep sleeves out of the dal. Loose open sleeves let cold air straight in.
  5. Neck opening. Toddlers hate a tight neck being pulled over their head. Stretch the neck rib gently with two hands. It should open wide and spring back.

Keep this list on your phone. It works for any brand.

Fleece, French terry or plain cotton: which sweatshirt fabric is warmest?

Fleece is the warmest, French terry sits in the middle, and plain non-fleeced cotton is the lightest. All three are knitted fabrics. The difference is what happens on the inside.

  • Plain cotton knit (no fleece). Smooth on both sides. It feels like a thicker, long-sleeved T-shirt. Light, easy to layer and almost impossible to overheat in.
  • French terry. Smooth on the outside, with small unbrushed loops on the inside. The loops sit against the skin, feel cushioned and soak up sweat. Warmer than plain knit, but still breathable.
  • Fleece (brushed). The inside loops are brushed until they open into a soft, fuzzy pile. That pile traps still air close to the body, which is why fleece feels warm the moment you put it on. Cotton fleece is warm and breathable; polyester fleece is warm but does not breathe the same way (more on that below).
Fabric Inside feels Warmth Breathability Best for Gozi example
Plain cotton knit, no fleece Smooth Light Very high Mild winters, AC rooms, layering under a jacket Oversized sets (100% biowashed cotton, no fleece lining)
Cotton French terry, 240 GSM Soft little loops Medium High Cool mornings, school runs, evenings in the park Fruits and Dino sweatshirt and jogger sets
Cotton fleece Fuzzy, brushed High Good North Indian winters, early mornings, travel to hill stations Furry Friends fleeced 2 piece set
Polyester fleece Fuzzy, slightly slippery High Low Outer layer in very cold, dry weather Not made by Gozi

If you only remember one thing: warmth comes from the inside finish and the layers you add, not from how thick a sweatshirt looks on the hanger.

Which sweatshirt does your city need? (Decision chart)

India does not have one winter. A sweatshirt that is perfect in Delhi in January will have a child sweating in Chennai in December. Use this chart as a starting point, then adjust for your own home (a ground-floor flat with marble floors feels colder than a top-floor one).

How it feels outside Typical places and months Sweatshirt to choose What to wear with it
Pleasant, cool only at night Chennai, Kochi, Mumbai, Goa, coastal cities in December and January Plain cotton, no fleece On its own in the evening, or carried for AC rooms and malls
Cool mornings and evenings, warm afternoons Bengaluru, Pune, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Kolkata from November to February 240 GSM French terry, or plain cotton over a T-shirt Cotton T-shirt underneath, so the sweatshirt can come off at noon
Properly cold, foggy mornings Delhi NCR, Lucknow, Jaipur, Chandigarh, Patna in December and January Cotton fleece, or French terry with a warm inner Thermal or full-sleeve cotton inner, plus a jacket, cap and socks outdoors
Very cold Hill stations and holidays in the mountains Cotton fleece as the middle layer Inner layer below, a proper winter jacket on top

The American Academy of Pediatrics gives a simple rule that works well alongside this chart: for older babies and young children, dress them in one more layer of clothing than an adult would wear in the same conditions, and use several thin layers rather than one heavy one. A sweatshirt is usually that "one more layer". If you are comfortable in a kurta and a shawl, your child is likely comfortable in a T-shirt and a cotton sweatshirt.

What does GSM tell you about a kids' sweatshirt?

GSM means grams per square metre. It is the weight of the fabric, and it is one of the few numbers on a label that tells you something real. A typical kids' T-shirt is much lighter than a sweatshirt; a 240 GSM French terry has real substance compared with thin leggings, yet it is not as heavy as fleece. That is why our joggers and French terry sets use 240 GSM: it works across most of the Indian year, from cool mornings and air-conditioned classrooms to winter evenings and active play.

Two cautions from the factory side:

  • GSM is not the same as warmth. A brushed fleece and an unbrushed French terry of similar weight feel very different, because the brushed pile traps more air.
  • Heavier is not better for small children. A very heavy sweatshirt on a two-year-old who runs around the house all morning is a recipe for a sweaty back and a cold when they stop. Thin layers you can remove beat one heavy layer you cannot.

If you want the full explanation, with the formula and what common GSM numbers mean, see what is GSM in fabric and our manufacturer's guide to French terry.

Is a polyester fleece sweatshirt bad for kids?

Polyester is not inherently unsafe. Polyester fleece is warm, cheap to make and dries quickly, which is why so much winter wear in the market uses it or uses a poly-cotton blend. The trade-off is breathability. Children run hot, move constantly and go in and out of warm rooms. A fabric that does not breathe well can leave them clammy under the sweatshirt, and some children with sensitive skin find it irritating.

We made a conscious choice to make our sweatshirt sets in 100% cotton, without polyester, even though polyester would make them cheaper for us to produce. Our advice is the same whichever brand you buy: read the fibre composition on the label, not just the price tag or the print. If you prefer natural fibres next to your child's skin, look for 100% cotton. We explain the comparison in more depth in polyester vs cotton for kids.

A related point on dyes and prints: the printing and dyeing for our oversized sweatshirt sets is done at GOTS-certified units. The Global Organic Textile Standard sets environmental and chemical criteria across textile processing, including chemical input restrictions, along with social criteria for workers. It is one useful signal when you are comparing brightly printed winter wear.

What size sweatshirt should you buy, and should you size up?

Buy your child's current age size, and only size up if the brand runs true to size and your child is at the top of the range. The reason is simple: many children's sweatshirts are already cut with growing room, and sizing up a garment that is already roomy gives you sleeves past the fingertips and a hem that catches on everything.

Here is how sizing works across our own range, so you can see the logic a maker uses:

Style Sizes How it is cut Our advice
Oversized sweatshirt sets 1-2Y to 7-8Y Intentionally oversized, runs larger than regular clothing Check the size chart on the product page; do not size up
240 GSM French terry sets 1-2Y to 7-8Y Relaxed fit with ribbed cuffs and an elastic jogger waist Buy the current age size
Fleeced and classic 2 piece sets 1-2Y to 5-6Y Relaxed fit, generally sized bigger than usual so it lasts longer Buy the current age size

Three quick checks at home tell you whether a sweatshirt fits well:

  • Arms up. Ask your child to reach for the ceiling. The hem should not climb above the belly button.
  • Cuff position. With arms down, the cuff should sit at the wrist bone or just over it. A little extra length is fine because ribbed cuffs can be folded once.
  • Layer test. Put it on over the T-shirt or inner your child will actually wear in winter. If it feels tight over the inner, it is the wrong size for the season.

Sweatshirt set or separate sweatshirt?

A sweatshirt set (top and matching jogger) is the easiest winter outfit there is. Getting dressed becomes one decision instead of two, and our French terry sets are cut and stitched as a pair in our own Tiruppur unit, so the colours match and age together wash after wash. Sets also solve the "warm top, cold legs" problem that comes from pairing a sweatshirt with thin leggings.

A separate sweatshirt makes sense when your child already has plenty of bottoms, or when you mainly need a top layer for school or travel. A good middle path is one or two sets plus a pair of neutral joggers, such as our grey 240 GSM French terry joggers, which go with any printed top. You can browse all bottoms in kids joggers and track pants.

From our sets range, the French terry options are the Fruits sweatshirt and jogger set in grey and the Dino sweatshirt and jogger set in black, both ₹1,199, with soft elastic jogger waists that make toilet-training days easier.

How many sweatshirts does a child need for winter?

Most children aged 1 to 8 need 3 to 5 sweatshirts (or sets) for an Indian winter. The exact number depends on three things: how cold your winter is, how often you do laundry, and how messy your child is. Cotton sweatshirts should be washed regularly, and in a north Indian winter they can take longer to dry, so plan for at least one in the wash and one drying at any time.

Your situation Age 1 to 3 (messy eaters, frequent changes) Age 4 to 8 (school, play, outings)
Mild winter, daily laundry 2 to 3 light sweatshirts 2 light sweatshirts
Mild winter, laundry 2 to 3 times a week 3 to 4 3
Cold winter, daily laundry 3 to 4 (at least 2 fleeced) 3 (at least 1 fleeced)
Cold winter, laundry 2 to 3 times a week 5 (at least 2 fleeced) 4 to 5 (at least 2 fleeced)

A balanced mix for a cold-winter city is one fleeced set for the coldest mornings, one or two French terry sets for school and outings, and one light, non-fleeced sweatshirt for the warm afternoons and AC rooms. In a mild-winter city, skip the fleece altogether.

Sweatshirts for girls and boys: is there a difference?

Between ages 1 and 8, a sweatshirt for a girl and one for a boy should be built exactly the same way: the same need for room to move, the same layering under it and the same tendency to overheat when they run around. The only real difference is the print your child chooses, and that matters, because a child who loves the print will actually wear the sweatshirt.

That is why we do not split our sweatshirt sets into boys' and girls' styles. Prints like Apple of My Eye, Happy Tails, Jungle Friends and Dino work for any child, so let your child choose. If you have a girl and a boy close in age, a unisex sweatshirt can also be handed down from one to the other.

For a baby boy or baby girl under 2, look for the same checklist with two extra points: a neck that opens wide (babies dislike things pulled over their face) and a set rather than a separate top, because a sweatshirt that rides up while crawling leaves the back bare.

How do you wash a cotton sweatshirt so it stays soft?

Cotton sweatshirts last for years if you wash them gently. These steps follow our own product care instructions:

  1. Machine wash cold with similar colours, on a gentle cycle. Cold washing helps the fabric keep its shape, colour and softness.
  2. Do not bleach. Bleach weakens cotton fibres and dulls colours.
  3. Air dry, or tumble dry on low. High heat is the main cause of shrinkage in cotton.
  4. Iron on low heat, inside out, if you need to iron at all.
  5. Store folded, or hang it, so it keeps its shape.

Fleece and French terry are thicker than plain knit, so they take longer to dry in winter. One extra tip: turning a printed sweatshirt inside out before washing protects the print. Hang fleece and terry in a shaded, airy spot rather than in direct harsh sun, which fades prints over time. For the complete care routine, see how to wash and maintain cotton clothes.

Safety: hoods, strings, car seats and bedtime

A sweatshirt is a simple garment, but four safety points are worth knowing.

Quick checklist before you buy

  • Label says 100% cotton (or you are happy with the blend listed)
  • Inside finish matches your winter: smooth for mild, loops for cool, fleece for cold
  • Relaxed at shoulders, chest and tummy, with room for an inner layer
  • Ribbed cuffs at the wrist (and ankle, for a set)
  • Neck opening stretches wide and springs back
  • No cord at the hood or neck
  • Size chosen with the brand's own fit in mind (no sizing up on oversized styles)
  • Enough pieces for your laundry routine: usually 3 to 5

Frequently asked questions

Which sweatshirt is best for kids in winter?

A 100% cotton sweatshirt matched to your city's winter. Choose fleeced cotton for north Indian winters, 240 GSM French terry for cool mornings and evenings, and plain non-fleeced cotton for mild southern and coastal winters. Pair it with a cotton inner when it gets colder rather than buying one very heavy sweatshirt.

Is a cotton sweatshirt warm enough for a Delhi winter?

On its own, a light cotton sweatshirt is not enough for early December and January mornings in Delhi. A fleeced cotton sweatshirt over a thermal or full-sleeve inner, with a jacket, cap and socks outdoors, is. Indoors, the sweatshirt and inner are usually enough.

What is the difference between a hoodie and a sweatshirt for kids?

A hoodie is a sweatshirt with a hood attached. The hood adds warmth for the ears and neck outdoors, but it bunches up behind the head in a car seat or pram, and hood drawstrings are a known strangulation hazard for young children. For everyday wear and school, a crew-neck sweatshirt plus a separate cap is often more practical for under-fives.

Should I buy a sweatshirt one size bigger for my child?

Only if the brand runs true to size and your child is at the top of the size range. Many kids' sweatshirts, including ours, are already cut with growing room. Our oversized sets run larger than regular clothing, so check the size chart and buy the current age size.

Can kids wear sweatshirts to sleep?

A light cotton sweatshirt is fine in a cold room without a heavy blanket. A thick fleece sweatshirt under a blanket can make a child overheat. A full-sleeve cotton night suit is usually the more comfortable choice for sleep.

Do cotton sweatshirts shrink?

Cotton can shrink with hot water and high-heat drying. Wash cold, air dry or tumble dry on low, and avoid bleach, and a good cotton sweatshirt keeps its size and softness through the season.
