Bath Towel for Baby: Muslin vs Terry vs Handloom, Which Is Best? A Maker's Guide to Size, GSM and How Many to Buy

The best bath towel for a baby in India is a soft, breathable cotton towel that dries quickly between baths, is large enough to wrap your child from head to toe, and has a hood to keep the head warm. For most Indian homes that means a 2-layer cotton muslin towel: it is light, absorbent and dries far faster in humid weather than thick terry. That is why we make our organic muslin hooded bath towels for babies and kids in GOTS-certified organic cotton at a generous 70 × 70 inches. Below, we compare muslin, terry and handloom cotton, then cover size, hoods, GSM, how many to buy and care.

We are Gozi, a kidswear maker with our own unit in Tiruppur, Tamil Nadu. Fabric construction is our daily work, so this guide explains towels the way a maker sees them: how the cloth is built, what that means on your baby's skin, and what actually matters in an Indian bathroom.

In this article

What is the best bath towel for a baby?

There is no single "best" towel for every family, but there is a best fit for most Indian babies. Judge any bath towel for baby on five things, in this order:

  1. Fibre: 100% cotton. It is soft, absorbent and breathable. Skip towels that do not state the fibre, and be wary of synthetic microfibre for delicate skin you want to pat, not rub.
  2. Construction: how the cloth is made (muslin, terry or flat handloom weave) decides how it feels, how much water it holds and how fast it dries.
  3. Drying time: in Chennai humidity or a Mumbai monsoon, a towel that stays damp until the next bath is a problem. Faster drying matters more in India than plushness.
  4. Size: big enough to wrap the whole body, so your baby does not get chilled while you dry them.
  5. Hood: a simple hood covers the head, which is the part that loses warmth first after a bath.

Our verdict as a maker: a large, hooded, 2-layer cotton muslin towel ticks all five for most of the year in most of India. A terry towel still has a place in a cold North Indian winter, and a light handloom towel is a lovely extra, as you will see below.

Muslin vs terry vs handloom: what is the difference?

All three can be pure cotton. What changes is how the yarn is woven, and that changes everything else.

  • Muslin is a light, loosely woven plain-weave cotton. A single layer is thin and airy, so baby towels use two or more layers stitched together. Air moves through it easily, which is why it dries quickly.
  • Terry is woven with extra loops of yarn standing up from the base cloth (the familiar "fluffy" hotel towel). The loops hold a lot of water, but the same loops trap moisture, so terry is heavier when wet and slower to dry.
  • Handloom cotton is woven on a hand-operated loom, usually as a flat weave (think of the traditional Indian gamcha, made finer). It is light and thin, dries fast and gets softer with washing, but one layer holds less water than terry or layered muslin.

Here is the side-by-side comparison we use when parents ask us which to buy. Save it; it is the quickest way to decide.

What matters 2-layer cotton muslin Cotton terry Handloom cotton
How it is made Open plain weave, layered Loop pile on a woven base Flat weave on a hand loom
Feel on skin Soft, smooth, airy Plush and thick Crisp at first, softens with washing
Weight when dry Light Heavy Very light
How it absorbs Comfortably absorbent, best for patting dry Holds the most water Absorbs, but holds less per layer
Drying time on a line indoors Fast Slow, especially in monsoon Fastest
Warmth after the bath Gentle warmth, not stuffy Warmest Least warm
Bulk in the wash and in a nappy bag Low High Lowest
Best for Everyday baths, most of India, most of the year Cold North Indian winters, heated bathrooms Summer, travel, beach, a spare

Which towel suits Indian weather, season by season?

India is not one climate, so one towel rarely suits every month. Use this decision guide. It is built around the two things that actually go wrong at bath time in Indian homes: a baby getting cold before they are wrapped, and a towel that never fully dries.

Season and place Main bath-time problem Best towel
Summer (March to June), anywhere Sweaty, sticky skin; heavy towels feel stuffy 2-layer muslin or handloom cotton
Monsoon (June to September), coastal and South India Towels stay damp and smell musty 2-layer muslin, plus one extra towel in rotation
Winter in South and West India Mild chill in the morning Hooded 2-layer muslin, wrapped promptly
Winter in North India (December to February) Baby gets cold the moment they leave the water Large hooded muslin, warmed room; terry as a second layer if your bathroom is very cold
Travel and swimming Weight and bulk in the bag Muslin or handloom (both fold small)

Whatever the season, warmth after the bath depends more on what you do than on the towel. The NHS advises parents to make sure the room you bathe your baby in is warm, then lift the baby out and pat them dry, paying special attention to skin creases (NHS, Washing and bathing your baby). In a North Indian winter, that means closing the bathroom door, keeping the towel ready and open before the bath starts, and dressing your child straight away in warm cotton layers (our baby winter clothes layering guide has a temperature chart for this).

Is a muslin towel good for babies? What does "2-layer" and "GOTS" mean?

Yes. Muslin is one of the most practical fabrics for a baby towel because it is soft, breathable and quick to dry. But not all muslin towels are built the same, so here is what the words on the label mean.

Why layers matter

A single sheet of muslin is too thin to dry a baby properly. Stitching two layers together doubles the cotton against the skin, so the towel absorbs comfortably, while the open weave still lets air through. That balance is the reason we chose a 2-layer muslin construction for our towels: soft, lightweight, breathable and absorbent, giving warmth without feeling heavy or bulky.

What "GOTS-certified organic cotton" actually tells you

GOTS (the Global Organic Textile Standard) is an international certification for organic textiles. It is stricter than "organic cotton" printed on a tag, because it checks the whole chain, not just the farm. According to GOTS, certified products must contain at least 70% certified organic fibres, products labelled "organic" need at least 95%, and the standard requires certification of all processing stages, from fibre processing to the finished product, with restrictions on chemical inputs (GOTS key features). For a towel that touches a baby's skin every day, that chain of checks is the point.

Our muslin towels are made from GOTS-certified organic cotton and coloured with organic dyes, and they get softer with every wash.

What size bath towel does a baby need?

Bigger than most parents expect. Many "baby towels" sold in India are small squares that cover a newborn for a few weeks and are outgrown well before the first birthday. A towel that wraps the whole body, head included, keeps your child warm while you dry each crease, and a large one keeps working for years.

Towel size In centimetres (approx.) What it can do
A small square baby towel Varies; check the listing Fine for a newborn; quickly outgrown
Gozi handloom bath towel, 60 × 30 inches (not in stock right now) 152 × 76 cm Long wrap; good for older kids and adults, travel and beach
Gozi muslin hooded towel, 70 × 70 inches 178 × 178 cm Full head-to-toe wrap for a baby with room to fold; still wraps a school-age child

Size rule of thumb: when the towel is laid out, your child should be able to lie on it with the hood at their head and enough fabric on both sides to fold over the tummy. If the sides do not meet, they will get cold while you dry the legs.

Hooded towel for baby: is the hood worth it?

Yes, especially for babies and toddlers. A wet head cools a small child quickly, and a hood does the job of the "towel around the head" that pediatricians describe, without you needing a second hand to hold it in place. The American Academy of Pediatrics advises parents to promptly wrap a towel around the baby's head and body to help them stay warm after bathing, and to gently pat the baby dry (AAP, HealthyChildren.org: Bathing Your Baby).

What to check in a hood:

  • It is sewn into a corner of the towel, so you can drop the hood on the head and wrap the rest around the body in one movement.
  • It is the same soft fabric as the towel, not a stiff trim.
  • No loose decorations such as buttons or long strings that a baby can pull.

The same AAP guidance also reminds parents never to leave a baby alone in the bath, even for an instant. Keep the open towel within arm's reach before the bath begins so you never have to step away.

Which GSM towel is best for a baby?

GSM (grams per square metre) tells you how heavy a fabric is for its size, not how soft it is. We explain the formula and what common numbers mean in our guide to what GSM means in fabric. For towels, three things are worth knowing:

  • Terry towels usually carry higher GSM numbers because the loops add a lot of yarn. A heavy terry holds more water, but it is also heavier on a small baby and slower to dry.
  • Muslin and handloom towels are lighter by nature. Comparing their GSM directly with terry is not a fair comparison, because a light towel that dries fully between baths often serves a baby better than a heavy one that stays damp.
  • For a baby, choose by construction first, then GSM. A higher number is only "better" if you live somewhere cold and dry, and even then, the hood and the size do more for warmth.

In short: in most of India, do not chase the highest GSM. Chase a soft, layered, breathable towel that is fully dry by the next bath.

How many bath towels does a baby need?

Fewer than the gift hampers suggest, but more than one. The AAP notes that newborns do not need a bath every day and that three baths a week during the first year may be enough, while the NHS bath checklist lists two towels ready at bath time. Add Indian weather and laundry routines, and this is the chart we give parents:

Your situation Bath towels to own Why
Baby under 1, bathed about 3 times a week, dry weather 2 One in use, one washed and ready
Daily bath (common in Indian summers) 3 One in use, one drying, one clean
Monsoon or very humid city 3 to 4 Towels take longer to dry fully
Two children, or a baby who also swims 4 or more Each child needs their own towel
Grandparents' home, daycare or travel bag +1 per place So no one borrows an adult towel

Three is the sweet spot for most families, which is why we put together a pack of three.

How do you wash a baby towel so it stays soft and absorbent?

Muslin rewards simple care. These are the habits we recommend for any cotton baby towel:

  1. Wash it before the first use. New cotton loosens up and becomes more absorbent after a wash.
  2. Use a mild detergent and skip fabric softener. Softeners leave a coating on cotton fibres that makes towels less absorbent over time.
  3. Wash baby towels with similar colours and avoid harsh bleach, which weakens cotton and fades prints.
  4. Dry it completely, ideally in sunlight and fresh air. In the monsoon, hang it open, not folded over a rod, and rotate in a fresh towel rather than reusing a damp one.
  5. Hang it open between uses, never bunched on a hook, so both layers dry.

Baby bath towel buying checklist

Run any towel, ours included, through these eight questions before you buy:

  • ☐ Is it 100% cotton, with the fibre clearly stated?
  • ☐ Is the construction named (muslin, terry, handloom), and does it suit your climate?
  • ☐ If it says organic, is it backed by a certification such as GOTS?
  • ☐ Is it large enough to wrap your child head to toe, with room to grow?
  • ☐ Does it have a soft, sewn-in hood with no loose trims?
  • ☐ Will it dry fully between baths in your home?
  • ☐ Is it machine washable and does it get softer, not rougher, with washing?
  • ☐ Do you know the return policy? Many brands, including us, do not accept returns on towels for hygiene reasons, so check the fabric and size details carefully first.

Frequently asked questions

Which material is best for a baby towel?

100% cotton. Among cotton towels, 2-layer muslin is the best all-round choice for most Indian homes because it is soft, breathable, absorbent enough to pat a baby dry and quick to dry between baths. Terry suits very cold, dry winters; handloom cotton is a light extra for summer and travel.

Can I use a normal towel for my baby?

You can, as long as it is clean, soft and cotton. The drawbacks of adult terry towels are weight, bulk and slow drying, and they have no hood. Many parents also prefer a separate towel for the baby so it is always fresh and washed without fabric softener.

Is a muslin towel good for a newborn?

Yes. Muslin is gentle and light, and a 2-layer muslin towel is soft enough for a newborn while staying useful as your child grows. Remember that newborns usually get sponge baths until the umbilical cord stump falls off, and the AAP says three baths a week in the first year may be enough.

Muslin vs terry towel: which is better for a baby?

For most of India, muslin. Terry holds more water and feels warmer, but it is heavier and slower to dry, which is a real drawback in humid and monsoon months. If you live in North India and your bathroom is cold in winter, a terry towel can be a useful second layer over muslin.

What size should a baby bath towel be?

Large enough to wrap your baby from head to toe with the sides overlapping across the tummy. Small newborn squares are outgrown quickly; our muslin hooded towels are 70 × 70 inches (about 178 × 178 cm), so they keep wrapping your child well beyond the baby years.

How often should I replace my baby's towel?

Replace it when it no longer dries your baby well, feels rough after washing or smells musty even after a full wash and sun-dry. Good cotton muslin gets softer with washing, so with simple care it lasts a long time.
